Looking for affordable pampering? We discovered The Market House hotel in Jaffa. Located in a historic building near the Clock Tower (and next to an amazing patisserie) the hotel reminded me of someplace chic in Midtown Manhattan - with the added benefit of a free nightly happy hour (Happy hour? It was an Ecstatic Hour? Who needed dinner with unlimited wine, substantial food and trays of baklava?).
What a treat to explore Maskit This iconic fashion house was Israel's first - created by Ruth Dayan, wife of Moshe Dayan and a force of nature (and nation) in our own right. The atelier focused on indigenous fashion techniques in both form and embellishment, but has lost some of its oomph as the decades progressed. Not so anymore! Fashion maven Sharon Tal took the helm, after returning from several years with Alexander McQueen and Maskit is more fabulous than ever. We explored the show room in an ancient building in Old Jaffa - glamorous and timeless designs surrounded by history. What a treat!
Our trip to Turning the Tables was amazing. No, we're not talking about the Real Housewife Teresa Guidice's newest cookbook - we're talking about a life-changing and life-saving organization that supports women and girls leaving the sex trade in Israel, and offers vocation training in the fashion arena. We were inspired.
What a joy to spend the last week with incredible women from around the country at Hadassah's National Convention in Atlanta. Where else can you share amazing courses, dance the night away and polish your advocacy skills with 900 of your best friends? It was truly a pleasure to have my mind stretched and share the experience with new and old friends who spanned about a half a century age-range.
Okay, it's not fashion in the classic sense, but in a sense, it has become the fashion -- BDS (Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions) seems to be en trend (at least in the liberal Bay Area, where I live). It sounds fairly innocuous and even righteous, but upon closer examination it -- like fashionable lingerie - reveals itself for what it is. And in the case of BDS, it's not tasteful but cheap and vulgar and garish. Don't believe me? Click here to learn about what I saw -- the glorification of terrorists, calls for the destruction of Israel and the most bizarre theories that I could never have even imagined.
Did you read the latest article (from just a few days ago) published in Vogue.com about Jaffa/Tel Aviv as a must-see destination? Read it here. And the really cool thing is that it's like the editors at Vogue read our tour itinerary for our summer Fashion, Food, Wine & Design Hadassah mission! But don't take my word for it - check out our itinerary here and join us! We are going to indulge our senses with the very finest that this Start Up Nation has to offer!
I've quickly become addicted to the Zionist Pugs cartoon strip! Sometimes it's either laugh or cry....#ZionistPugs #Pugs #Falafel #Israel #Zionist #Israel #IsraeliCartoonProject
Have you met I.Ronny - Zionist Pug? This pooch does a great job illustrating the double-standard faced by Israel. And, well, who doesn't love a pug? #Zionist #Pug #Israel
One of the great things about upcycling is that it frees one to be creative. A well-loved, sad little pair of softly scuffed brown loafers? No problem - they've now been painted, marbled, accessorized and are ready for an afternoon of fun! Upcycling saves me money and time otherwise spent shopping. Plus, I feel good keeping perfectly usable things out of the landfill. I admit that it's easier to be unconventional living in a college beach town in the California Bay Area. I wish I'd thought to take before photos (shoulda, coulda, woulda...)
With these shoes, I haven't really lost my marbles - I've found them! #upcycle #shoes #tikkunolam #recycle #marbles
What's better than getting together with a dynamic group of fabulous Turbo Type A Women to create a high end designer sale to raise money for a great cause? I had the pleasure of helping to plan our community's first Step Into Fashion event, where 30 top California fashion designers presented their gorgeous clothing and accessories to raise money for the Palo Alto Medical Foundation's Cancer Survivorship Program. Check out this video and you'll see why I'm ready to start planning next year's Step Into Fashion Designer Sale! Have questions about creating your own event? Tweet, Facebook or Contact me. I'd love to connect. #PAMF #StepIntoFashion #StyleMitzvah #Cancer
